Robert S. Dargan, Jr, 92, of West Haven entered into rest on January 31, 2019 at Orange Health Care, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Margaret Glacken Dargan. Bob is survived by a large Irish clan including his children Robert S. (Joanne) Dargan III, Stephen D. Dargan, former longtime State Representative, Timothy P. (Debra) Dargan, Mary Margaret Dargan, grandchildren Sean R. (Denise) Dargan, Brian P. (Katherine) Dargan, Caitlin A. (Timothy) Neal, Shannon M. Dargan, Daniel P. Dargan, great grandchildren Claire, Pierce, Vivian, Caroline and Reagan, siblings Richard (Nancy) Dargan, Sister Mary Faith Dargan, OP, Virginia (Richard)) Doyle and the late Rev. Father Peter Dargan and his longtime companion Marilyn Moran. Born in West Haven, Bob played football in high school and college. In the 1940’s, he played at Yale Bowl on Thanksgiving Day before a crowd of 20,000 in the West Haven vs. Hillhouse football game. Along with other players from both teams, Bob was honored during the 100th anniversary of Yale Bowl. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from UCONN and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho. An active member of the West Haven community, Bob served as Democratic Chairman of the third district for 25 years; as tax assessor for the city, vice-president of the Twilight League, a member of the Knights of Columbus. In 2012, Bob was bestowed the honor of Irishman of the Year. He served in the US Army, stationed in Korea and was a daily communicant of St. Lawrence Church. Originally Bob worked in sales at New Haven Tobacco and then at New Britain Candy. The Dargan family would like to thank the entire staff at Orange Health Care for their love and compassion shown to Uncle Bob.
Visitation will take place on MONDAY from 5 to 8 pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the green. On Tuesday morning the procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Lawrence Church 11 o’clock. Interment, with military honors, will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery, so Bob can listen to the Yale Football games on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Lawrence School 231 Main St., West Haven, CT. 06516.
