Anthony Scalesse Jr, more affectionately known as “Tony” and “Pop,” passed away peacefully on July 27, 2024 at the age of 70, surrounded by his loving family. His life was a testament to hard work, passion, and an unwavering love for his family, friends, and his pets. Born in New Haven, CT on January 27, 1954, a son of the late Anthony and Gloria (Civitello) Scalesse Sr.,he grew up as a delivery boy for Danny’s Market in the Hill Section of New Haven. In 1975, Tony married his forever love, Dolores (Velardi) and together they welcomed their two sons, Tony III and Steven. After two years at the University of New Haven, he embarked on a fulfilling career that spanned various roles, each showcasing his dedication and skills. He owned and operated "Deli Plus" in New Haven from 1978 to 1980, where his culinary talents and friendly demeanor endeared him to the community. From 1981 to 1990, Tony served as the Seafood Manager at PathMark in Hamden, where he excelled in management and customer service. Later, he contributed to his community's well-being through his role at the West Haven Housing Authority until his retirement in 2010.
Upon retiring, Tony and his cherished wife, Dolores, fulfilled a lifelong dream by relocating to Kannapolis, NC, to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Together, they loved creating new memories and enjoying a warmer climate. Countless nights at the Kannapolis Summer Concert Series with his wife and children were some of his most cherished memories. Tony's passion for family extended to their vacations, where he delighted in trips to Lake George, Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, Disney World alongside The Wheeler Family, Foxwoods with the Bingo Crew, Siesta Key with The Finnell Family, and beyond. These adventures were unforgettable moments spent with those he held dear.
A devoted sports enthusiast, Tony found great joy in cheering for his favorite teams: the NY Yankees, NY Giants, Boston Celtics, NY Rangers and UConn Huskies. His love for sports extended beyond the spectator realm as he was an avid sports card collector and passed on this hobby to his sons, bonding over their shared enthusiasm. Tony's green thumb was legendary among family and friends. He took immense pride in tending to his garden and yard, even earning recognition with a beautification award by the City of West Haven—a testament to his skill and dedication. Throughout his life, Tony was a steadfast animal lover, always having a canine companion by his side. From his first dog, Heeshee, to his first grand-pup Red, and most recently his Freddie, Tony's bond with his pets was a reflection of his kind and nurturing spirit.
Tony will be remembered for his strong yet quiet demeanor and his unwavering loyalty to those he loved. He leaves behind a legacy of love, hard-work, and cherished memories that will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife Dolores (Velardi) and his children Anthony Scalesse III (Crystal) and Steven Scalesse (Rachael). He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Jecyra, Jaedon, Anthony IV, Rosie and Giuliana. Tony is survived by his sisters Sally Taroli (William) and Barbara Ackerson (Al). Additionally, he is predeceased by brothers-in-law, Anthony Fonda Sr and Edward Oleksy Jr. Furthermore, Tony leaves behind his brothers and sisters-in-law, John Velardi (Laura), Joann Bagnoli (Frank), Lois Fonda, Donna Oleksy and Cheryl Certo (Tom) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 1st from 4-8 PM at West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. On Friday morning the procession will leave the funeral home at 8:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 o’clock in St. John Vianney Church of St. John XXIII Parish. Interment will be private.
