Arthur James Friend IV, 73, of West Haven, beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, son, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. With a glimmer in his eye, a smirk, and a cheeky joke, he could spark lifelong friendships, defuse any tension, soothe hurt, and unite a divided room. Art loved helping others, either by providing clothes, a job, or just a ride to his kids' soccer games for someone in need of community.
He leaves behind his wife of 42 years, Carol (Hensel) Friend; son Arthur James “AJ” Friend V and his wife Mary; sister Leslie (Friend) Keiser; niece Diana Schaeffer and her husband David; nephew Jamie Keiser and his wife Aamna; and beloved dogs Rusti and China. He was preceded in death by parents Leslie and Mary (Grabnickas) Friend; nephew Johnny Keiser; brother-in-law John Keiser; daughter Emily; and her dog Sasha, who comforted him after Emily passed away.
Born March 31, 1952, in New Haven, CT, Art graduated from West Haven High School in 1971. He played hockey for WHHS and American International College in Springfield, MA, and then semi-professionally, leaving and receiving many stitches in his wake. He was a ski bum in Denver, a waiter, a cricket-releasing manager at the restaurant where he met his wife, a contractor and housing provider in New Haven, the property manager at Fair Haven Community Health Clinic, and a dedicated coach of youth soccer and basketball.
His children inherited his curiosity, athleticism, and irreverence. His wife continues his legacy with her love of a clever quip, zest for life, and care for others. Through his misadventures, good deeds, and sense of humor, Art will be widely loved and remembered.
In accordance with his wishes, Art was cremated and placed in an urn he had specifically chosen. Join us to remember Art on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Please bring your favorite stories and memories. No speeches are planned, but Art certainly wouldn't turn one down. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions toward scholarships can be made in Art’s name to: West Haven Penalty Box Club, c/o Jeff Guarino, 125 Perry Merrill Drive, West Haven, CT 06516.
