Barbara Berthel Hawes, 78, of West Haven, died on November 3, 2021. Born in New Haven on September 4, 1943, a daughter to the late Harold and Marie (Early) Berthel.
Survived by her daughter Kristin (Klarn) DePalma; sons Jonathan (Michelle) & Michael (Stacey) Hawes; sister Sandra (Michael) Streitwieser; brother Bruce (Beth) Berthel; and grandchildren Katie, Andrew, Julia, Jack, Owen, Nora, and Addilyn. Barbara is predeceased by her most-adored husband David Hawes.
Barbara enjoyed the first five years of her professional career as an elementary school teacher, and subsequently spent over forty years managing real estate offices throughout the shoreline of New Haven County with her husband. Her hobbies and interests included reading, gardening, cooking with and for her family, spending time on her patio by the beach with her friends over coffee, and all things interior design. Barbara was known for being a keen listener, always providing sound advice both within her work and personal relationships. Above all else however, she was celebrated to be the most loving mother, wife, sister, grandmother, and friend to many. Her grandchildren were especially adored; perhaps her favored pastime was watching all seven grow up, attending various athletic events, school plays, graduations, and other life events. Barbara will be missed by all who knew her.
Calling hours will take place on Saturday, November 20th, from 10 to 2 o’clock, at the funeral home. Subsequent services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Connecticut Hospice of Branford.
