A devout Catholic, Benylda Rosa Campo De la Hoz (formerly of River Edge, NJ) was reunited with God on December 21, 2024, and will rest forever in His loving embrace. She suffered from renal failure for thirteen years and succumbed to complications from it.
Benylda was born in Ciénaga, Magdalena in Colombia to Carmen and Rodrigo Campo on September 17th, 1933. She was the eldest of five children – Benylda, Orlando, Miguel, Marina, and Rodrigo - and spent her childhood on the shores of Barranquilla. She overcame much adversity in her life; she lost her father at age twelve, and her younger brother Orlando shortly thereafter to a boat accident. At this point she began working to support her family, which was the genesis of a tireless work ethic that served her for her whole life.
She was survived by her husband Carlos for just two days before he joined her in eternal rest; brothers Miguel and Rodrigo and her sister Marina. Benylda was a loving mother to her children; Rudy (Michele), Carlos (the late Joni), Marlene (Christopher) Bosco, Manuel (Dawn), Herman (Anita); a doting grandmother to twelve grandchildren including Michael (Julie), Carly (Henry), Matthew, Christopher, Andrew, Philip, Joseph, Emily, Dylan, Gabrielle (Matthew), Tyler, Victoria – and two great-grandsons, Leo and Cooper. Her grandkids have many fond memories of her hugs, her stellar empanadas, her belly laughs, her love of plátanos, and the smell of her perfume.
As a teenager, she met her husband Carlos in the department store she worked in, where he would come in repeatedly to visit her. They wed years later and went on to have five beautiful children. At the urging of cousins who lived in America, they bravely moved here to start a new life with their children, despite not knowing the native language.
Throughout her years living in New Jersey, in addition to raising her five children and putting them through parochial school, Benylda went on to become the supervisor of the Randa Neckwear tie factory in Hackensack, NJ. She would continue to be a dedicated worker at several other jobs throughout her life.
On Saturday December 28, visitation for both Benylda and Carlos will take place from 11am to 12:30 pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green, 662 Savin Avenue, West Haven, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 pm in the Church of St. Louis (St. John XXIII Parish), 89 Bull Hill Lane, West Haven, CT. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
