Betty Sweeney

Betty Irene Sweeney, 80, of Austin Street, New Haven, died on October 31, 2025. Born in New Haven on February 3, 1945, a daughter of the late Edward James Sweeney, Jr. and Frieda May Riehm Sweeney, Betty was also predeceased by her sisters Mary Etta Sweeney, Louise Gonzalez and Edna Briggs.  She leaves two brothers Edwin Sweeney III and Robert J. Sweeney Sr. and many loving nieces and nephews and their children who Betty treated as her very own.  They include Barbara and Brenda Sweeney, Diane Corley, Arthur J. Sweeney, Sr and the late Debra Flannigan, David Gonzalez, Cecilia Reagen, Lillian and Janet Gonzalez, Richard and Rochelle Briggs, Robert J. Sweeney Jr., Janet and Edwin Sweeney, great nephews Enoch Cain Jr., Matthew and Michael Cain, Arthur J. Sweeney Jr., Alex, Christian and Anthony Sweeney.

A 1963 graduate of Hillhouse High School, Betty lived her entire life in the Elm City.  For over 40 years she was employed in housekeeping at the former Soundview Nursing Home, West Haven. She enjoyed music, dancing and travel.

Calling hours will take place Tuesday, November 11, 2025, from 9:30 until 11:00 at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green.  A prayer service will begin at 11 o’clock in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, 871 Campbell Avenue, West Haven.
