Daniel John Maffeo, of the Morris Cove section of New Haven, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 11, 2024.
Born September 9, 1934, a son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth Maffeo, Dan was raised in a modest and hard-working household on Wilson Street. A lifelong resident of New Haven, he attended Horace Day Elementary School and then Hopkins Grammar School. Following the early death of his father, Dan put aside his own childhood dreams to take care of his mother, younger brother and sister. Despite this, he proudly held many titles throughout his life, successful bar and restaurant owner, E1 electrician working throughout CT, and subsequently his greatest venture - proprietor of VIP Apartments for almost 70 years.
In addition to his wife Louise, he is survived by one sister, four children, and six grandchildren, his most cherished achievements. He was predeceased by his brother Lewis Maffeo.
Dan will always be remembered as a tireless worker and someone who sought to raise a successful family by teaching them the value of hard work and a dollar. Never taking a sick day, he believed work and a glass of orange juice were the cures to all of life’s problems. If he encountered you dining out, he probably picked up your check. At home, you’d find him behind a newspaper until the wee hours of the morning, only to head to work before the sun rose. He left a lasting impression with everyone he met and with everything he touched. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
A private ceremony was held at St Lawrence Cemetery on the morning of Aug 16. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
