Doris A. Sincavage

Doris Sincavage, 80, of West Haven, passed away surrounded by her loving family after fighting a brief illness.

She is survived by her daughter Anne Ruotolo (Geoff Nosal) and son Jason Ruotolo; as well as two brothers George Sincavage and Stanley Sincavage, Jr.  Doris was predeceased by her parents Anne and Stanley Sincavage and by her former husband, Donald V. Ruotolo.

She grew up in New Haven and attended Sacred Heart grammar school and Ansonia high school.  Doris was affectionately called “The Bird” or “Little Bird,” as she was quick and light on her feet, and flittered about with energy and grace. She also protected her family nest and brought joy wherever she went.

Doris was small but mighty, loyal and protective. At a young age she would stand up to bullies, protecting her younger brother.  She was present at all her kids’ events and was a school lunch aide to be close by when they were in grammar school. 

She was a talented seamstress who made outfits for her daughter, and they were in fashion shows together, wearing her creations. Doris also made all her kids Halloween costumes by hand.

She was a true sports fan! She encouraged her kids to play sports, supported them at all their soccer and hockey games and she played in an adult soccer league when her kids were older. 

Doris's favorite teams were the Ohio State Buckeyes and the New York Rangers. She even incorporated their team colors and logos into her home décor.

Doris lived a full life and had many activities and hobbies throughout her life. She loved to dance, garden and cook; and she made delicious food with the vegetables she grew. She loved to be in the kitchen cooking for her family and friends and was known for her famous potato salad.  She was involved in her church; she also enjoyed reading, target practice, taking day trips, and mostly spending time with her family including cousins, aunts and uncles. Family was everything to her.

Doris was a true and loyal friend. She enjoyed frequent trips to the beach in Rhode Island with her friend, Sarah Johnson and also spending time with another close friend, Sandy Reiss.

Doris lived and worked in West Haven for most of her life. She was a bookkeeper for small businesses in West Haven and worked at the front desk of a local hotel.

The role that gave her the most joy was that of being a mom. She was so good at it, that several of her kids’ friends considered her a second mother. Her home was the gathering spot for all her kids’ friends because she created a warm, welcoming and fun home for everyone. She opened her home and welcomed all family and friends, and it was not uncommon for one of her kid's friends to stay for a week or more.

Doris will be remembered for her kindness, good-heartedness, and selfless nature. She was positive, encouraging, a good listener, a natural caregiver and was a joy to be around. She had a wonderful sense of humor and frequently shared the most endearing and unique laugh.

Doris was a bright light in this world who radiated joy and love. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 26, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Holy Infant Church.  Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
