Ethel Theresa McManus, beloved wife of Carl McManus and loving mother of Rose McManus, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2023, with her family at her side. In addition to her heartbroken husband and daughter, Ethel leaves her granddaughter Autumn, who was her absolute greatest joy in life. Ethel also leaves behind Autumn’s father, Patrick Mansfield, her in-laws Roselyn, Yvonne and William McManus, her cat Athena; 2 brothers, a sister, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Having lived most of her life in West Haven, she was the foster daughter of Andrew and Rose Chiaramonte, whom she loved as her only parents.
Ethel’s professional accomplishments include a Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from Southern Connecticut State University, and her sixth-year certificate in Administration Supervision from Fairfield University. She taught for 43 years in the Milford School system and was an Adjunct Supervisor for both Sacred Heart University and the University of Bridgeport.
Ethel had many hobbies and interests, first and foremost was her role as “Nana” to Autumn. They spent countless hours doing whatever fun idea Nana had or Autumn wanted to pursue. A devout member of the St. John XXIII Parishes, Ethel prayed the rosary daily, was a faithful communicant and participated in many aspects of the church life. As a lover of animals, she fed the birds and enjoyed quality time with her dog and many cats over the years.
Besides the Chiaramontes, Ethel was predeceased by three brothers Frank, Howard, Raymond Monahan and the beloved family pit bull, Julian.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday afternoon May10, 2023 at 1 pm at St. John XXIII, St. John Vianney Campus at 300 Captain Thomas Boulevard, West Haven. Per Ethel’s request, there are no other services. Contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, 749 E. Main Street, Branford, CT 06405.
