George Sperry Obituary

George Sperry, known to most as “Chip”, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2023. Born on June 18, 1949, he was a son of the late Russell J. and Doris McKiernan Sperry. A lifelong resident of West Haven, Chip was a true Westie icon, “Rock Rat,” and star athlete in all sports he played, especially hockey. He held the title of hockey Captain at West Haven High School Blue Devils, wearing #7 which was retired in his honor in 2008.

A die-hard Marine who fought for our country in the Vietnam War, he received numerous medals including: the National Defense Service medal; Vietnam Service medal; Cross of Gallantry w/Palm Campaign Medal; Combat Action Ribbon; and Meritorious Unit Citation. Although wounded in action, he lived each day of his life with a strong, passionate and devoted love for God, his country, and the Marines. In his honor a brick lays in the West Haven Veterans Memorial Walk and in the winding pathway of Semper Fidelis Memorial Park overlooking the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

George entered politics early in life serving as VP of the third Congressional District Young Democrats, a member of the Democratic Town Committee, elected to the Board of Tax Review, and the youngest Veteran to run for the office of State Representative. He completed his political career as the Housing Code Director for the City of West Haven. Known as a great friend and “brother”, Chip was always there to lend a hand, an ear, or engage in an occasional debate, preferably political, over a cup of coffee. Always smiling with those Irish eyes, he never complained although life gave him more than his fair share of battles he always chose to “Keep the Faith”.

His family was the core of his life and he loved each of them with all of his heart. Those left to mourn and remember his life include his wife, best friend and love of his life, Judy Trosuk Sperry; his beloved daughter Monica Sperry Lamparski; his granddaughter, the apple of his eye and kindred spirit, Madison Lamparski; and his beloved siblings: Russell Sperry, Jack (Maureen) Sperry, Doris “Sissy” Sperry Minard, Robert “Bobby” Sperry, and Marylou Sperry Ramirez.  He was predeceased by brothers-in-law David Minard and Hank Ramirez.

The hours for visitation will take place on Sunday (TODAY) from 4 to 7 pm at the West Haven Funeral Home.  On Monday morning, the procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Holy Infant Church at 11 o’clock.  Interment, with military honors, will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

“Rest in Peace my strong Marine”
