Gloria (Crenshaw) Stokes

Gloria Crenshaw Stokes, 65, beloved mother, sister, partner, and friend, sadly departed this life on May 24, 2020 at Yale New Haven Health. She was the daughter of the late Bessie Crenshaw Lewis of New Haven. Born on February 15, 1955, Gloria grew up in New Haven and graduated from Wilbur Cross High School.

Gloria proudly served her country in the United States Army for many years and after being honorably discharged, she dedicated her life to caring for others. She did so with joy as the Recreational Director at the Regal Care Nursing home in West Haven. Gloria was loved by both the residents and her co-workers at Regal Care. The residents especially loved the costumes that Gloria would wear it brought light and energy to their lives.

A bowling enthusiast, Gloria was a proud member of AMF, where she met the love of her life, the late Neal Acosta. Gloria was an amazing cook, and loved walking on the beach, playing computer games and watching her favorite cartoons especially “Sponge Bob”.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Tamika Johnson Crenshaw of New Haven, grandchildren, Antoine Merritt and Charlae Butler,  of New Haven; siblings, Wanda Lewis of Manchester, CT, Michael Lewis of Stamford, CT, Bennie Lewis, Jr., of New Haven, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gloria is predeceased by her mother, Bessie Crenshaw Lewis; her stepfather, Bennie Lewis, Sr., her loving companion, Neal Acosta; her sister, Betty Johnson; and her brother, Robert Crenshaw. A celebration of life will be held for Gloria on Friday, July 10, 2020 at 1 p.m. at State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Ln, Middletown, CT 06457.
