Herbert Joseph Reed, Jr., known fondly as "Herbie", passed away peacefully at home on January 19, 2025, surrounded by love and the cherished memories of a life well-lived. Born on August 15, 1938, Herbie brought light and laughter into the world that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
His devoted wife of 50 years, Christine “Chickie” Reed was by his side and lovingly cared for him until his last breath. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in love, family, and shared joy. He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert Joseph Reed, Sr., and Florence Samuelson Reed, as well as his brother, Charles Reed, whose memories he held close to his heart.
A proud and loving father, Herbie is survived by his four children: Robin Reed Baylis (Daniel), Christopher Reed (Renee), Robert Reed (Eileen), and Patrick Reed (Anamika) as well as Cynthia Lorusso, and Laura McGowan (John). He took immense pride in his 13 grandchildren and his four great-grandchildren. His family was his greatest treasure, and he never missed an opportunity to share his pride in their accomplishments.
Herbie served his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960 as a Third-Class Petty Officer aboard the USS Aucilla AO-56. Following his military service, he dedicated 25 years to the West Haven Police Department, where he built a reputation as a steadfast and respected officer. After his retirement, he continued his commitment to justice as an investigator for the Connecticut State’s Attorney.
A man of many passions, Herbie was a proud member of the Division of Criminal Justice Local 749, the New Haven Gun Club, the Raccoon Club, and the Elks Club. He shared his knowledge and love of the outdoors as an instructor with the Connecticut Conservation Education program. Even in retirement, he stayed active, spending his days at Onofrio’s Fruit Market, where he formed countless friendships and loved tagging along on deliveries.
Herbie found joy in hunting trips to Maine with his friends, even if the group’s successes were more about camaraderie than their catches. Known to many as “Habib,” he had an infectious smile, a sparkle in his eyes, and a talent for storytelling that brought history to life, especially his stories of West Haven and the family he adored.
Herbie’s legacy is one of love, loyalty, and laughter. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will carry his memory forward, living with the same warmth and pride he so freely shared.
Herbie’s family would like to thank everyone who enriched his life with their friendship and love, especially his nurses and caregivers from the VA and AccentCare. In honor of his life, may we all take a moment to tell a good story, share a smile, and hold our loved ones a little closer. Rest in peace, Herbie. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
