James D. Atwood, Sr., 84, a longtime resident of West Haven entered into rest on January 11, 2026. He was the husband of the late Joann Kowalewski Atwood. Jim’s family includes his children Debbie Giordano, Ann-Marie Giannotti, Judy Atwood and Jim Atwood, Jr.; seven grandchildren Jennifer Herten, David Atwood, Anastasia Nadeau-DeBerry, Jacinda McMenamin, Caden Atwood, Michael Giannotti, and James D. Atwood III; great-grandchild Aubree Herten; brother Steven Atwood; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim was predeceased by his parents Herbert and Nora Nolan Atwood; his beloved and favorite sister Barbara Coss; and brother Edward Atwood.
A U.S. Navy veteran, Jim served aboard the USS John Hood. For over 30 years, he was a member of Teamsters Union Local 443 and primarily drove for Carolina Freight.
Visitation will take place on Thursday January 15 from 4 to 7 pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. On Friday morning the procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. John Vianney Church. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
