James Miller Dahlgard, 93, formerly of West Haven, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2024. James was a man of integrity, kindness, and deep commitment to his family and community. His legacy will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born in West Haven on July 19, 1931, a son of the late Victor and Evelyn Noble Dahlgard and younger brother to the late Shirley Michel. James was a proud graduate of West Haven High School, where he excelled as a three-sport athlete, who was later recognized when he was inducted into the WHHS Athletic Hall of Fame. West Haven High was also where he met his other half and love of his life, the late Marilyn Smith Dahlgard.
In 1949, he graduated from WHHS and went on to complete a postgraduate year at the prestigious Hopkins School. His athletic prowess earned him the New Haven Gridiron Club award for outstanding player in the district. In 1954, Jim graduated from Colgate University, where he continued to shine as a football player. He was also honored with several accolades, including the Twilight League Gold Bat award and the Jimmy Fund award. His passion for sports extended beyond his playing days, as he dedicated many years to coaching young athletes in the Ray Tellier Midget Football, West Shore Baseball, and basketball leagues. Jim instilled the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship in countless children, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
Jim proudly served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful career in the insurance industry. He was a long-time manager at Travelers Insurance Company and eventually retired as President of Schoff Darby Insurance Companies.
Throughout his life, Jim was deeply committed to his family. He and Marilyn raised their growing family together with affection, humor, and patience in West Haven, CT and watched their love flourish for over 70 years. He was a loving and thoughtful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, providing unwavering support and guidance. Poppy, as he was better known by his family, will be remembered for his incredible mind, wit, and loving nature as well as his competitive nature. He embodies the qualities of love and encouragement, always showing up for every game, recital and family gathering with a presence that could light up any room. His commitment to family was evident in everything he did, from sharing stories about his own life to imparting great wisdom that will guide us for generations to come. His kindness and generosity extended beyond his family to everyone he encountered, earning him the love and respect of many.
James Dahlgard is survived by his son James Jr; daughters Kyle Pfahl and Kirsten Farquharson; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His love will continue to resonate in our hearts, and his legacy will live on through the value he instilled in us. Services will be private at this time.
