Joan Brindisi Obituary

Joan (Joanie) M. Brindisi’s light left this world to shine on in the universe on January 30, 2025. Our loved ones leave behind a light that will never dim. It is kept bright by the love we feel and the memories we made. Her life was characterized by compassionate leadership and a continuous drive to promote positivity and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Joanie was predeceased by her loving devoted mother Josephine Vigorito Brindisi and father Joseph. Joan grew up amongst her large family which centered around her Italian grandparents.  This was like her first village, where she formed lasting relationships with her first friends, her cousins, including those that left us too soon, Vinny, Debbie, Laura and Nancy. The beach was a special place with unforgettable moments growing up. Joanie went to school in West Haven and began a lifelong interest in the healthcare field.  She continued her studies in nursing and worked  at Yale New Haven Hospital upon graduation from nursing school.  She later relocated to Washington D.C. to pursue and receive a degree as a Physician’s Assistant at Howard University.  She had a successful career as a P.A, eventually working in a position for the government’s correctional system.  She remained in that position until her retirement.  At that time, she continued to use her medical knowledge and expertise, by transitioning to a new career, fulfilling a lifetime dedication to the love of animals.  Joanie’s empathy and commitment to the welfare and care of animals was incredible.  Her compassion for them led her working many years at Hyattsville Veterinary Hospital in Maryland, where she became part of a team of professionals and fast friends with Doc and his staff. There Joanie’s passion resulted in many feline patients suddenly becoming a part of her home family of pets.

Joanie then found her second village of friends and extended family in the loving, diverse town of Brentwood MD.  There she met many including Dolly and Bill, leaders in the community and cherished longtime friends. Joanie brought and shared her beloved family traditions.  Joanie was active as a leader, supporter and sponsor, for many causes and support groups.  She had a unique ability to give advice and guidance, helping others, not just to survive life’s obstacles, but to be an even better person in spite of them.  She was passionate in her support of human rights, diversity, civil rights, the LGBT community, woman’s rights and the quest for equality.

Joanie was a loving sister to Michael, always there for love, advice and support.  She never complained and was generous to a fault. She leaves behind brother Michael Brindisi of West Haven as well as many dear cousins including, Crissy Trasacco , Valerie Maloney, Luann Chambers and neighbor and friend, Dolly Pomerleau who has been a treasured friend to Joanie and a blessing to our family.

A celebration of Joanie’s life will be announced at a later date.
