Joann M. Atwood, 78, of West Haven passed away peacefully with a beautiful view of the ocean near her bedside. She was the beloved wife of 55 years of James D. Atwood, Sr. Born in Waterbury, a daughter to the late Henry & Bernice Woznaikaitis Kowalewski. In addition to her husband, Joann leaves a large and loving family including her children Deborah (Mike) Giordano, Ann-Marie (Bruce) Gianotti, Judith (Mike) Bowers and James D. (Charleen) Atwood, Jr. seven cherished grandchildren Jennifer, DJ, Anastasha, Jacinda, Caden, Michael and James III, a precious great granddaughter Aubree, two sisters Elizabeth (Ray) Anderson, Mary (Bob) Yanchis and many nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Joann devoted her life to caring for her family and to her life at church. She enjoyed baking, doing crossword puzzles, crocheting, playing bingo and taking trips to the casino. However, she was most noted for her famous pierogies, cookies and cakes!
Visitation will take place on Friday from 5 to 8 pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the green. On Saturday morning the procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Lawrence Church, St. John the XXIII parish at 10 o’clock. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Office of Radio and Television (Channel ETWN), 15 Peach Orchard Road, Prospect, Connecticut 06712.
