John P. Dougherty, of West Haven, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026. John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Barbara Carlo Dougherty, whom he now joins in heaven. He leaves behind his two devoted daughters, Alyssa Dougherty and Caitlin (Kevin) Shabbott, his sister and brother, Ann and Mark Dougherty, as well as his sister-in -law, Deborah Tondalo; his niece, Vanessa Tondalo, nephew, Brett (Venessa Luciano) Tondalo and great-nephew and nieces, Angelo, Gabriella, and Harper.
John lived in Shelton prior to moving to West Haven with his wife. Very proud to be from the Valley, he worked for many years as the branch manager at Shelton Savings Bank. Prior to his retirement, John was employed as a tax preparer for H&R Block. John was honored to have served in the Army, where he received the National Defense Service Medal, among other commendations. He was a skilled marksman and was a member of Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16. He and Barbara were loyal parishioners of Our Lady of Victory Church, as their faith remained a guiding force throughout their lives.
In addition to his parents, John and Martha Schwab Dougherty, John was predeceased by his brother, Michael Dougherty and brother-in-law, Pasquale Tondalo, whom he is reunited with in heaven. John’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Maplewood Senior Living for their care, compassion, and empathy these last months, as well as his live-in aide, Love, who adored him.
