John G. (Jack) Pickering, Sr., 85, of West Haven, died peacefully in his sleep at home on April 11, 2026. Jack was predeceased by the love of his life, Rosemary Sullivan Pickering. Jack grew up in the Hill section of New Haven. He was the former owner of Pickering General Food Store and the innovative Pickering’s Door to Door General Store, a business where he went door to door selling his products. A member of the International Brick Layers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1, Jack was well known throughout the area for his skill as a mason and as owner of Pickering & Sons Construction.
Proud of his Irish heritage, Jack was also proud of the family he and Rosemary raised, his daughter Rosemary Pickering and four sons John G. (Linda) Pickering, Jr., Brian (Martha) Pickering, Patrick (Kerri) Pickering, and Matthew (Karen) Pickering. In addition to his children, he will be sadly missed by grandchildren Ryan (Anna) Pickering and Shawn (Jess)Pickering; daughter-in-law Krista Pickering, great grandchildren Greyson and Charlee; and siblings Kate (Michael) Burns, Elizabeth Szollosi and Francis Buddy Peterson as well as many friends at the Waucoma Yacht Club and Bayshore Manor. Awaiting him in heaven is his beloved grandson Conor Patrick Pickering. He was also predeceased by siblings MaryEllen Ahern, Micky Peterson and Sheila Peterson.Jack lived life to the fullest, enjoyed woodworking, camping, his masonry but most of all his family and friends.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday morning April 15 at 10:30 in St. John Vianney Church of St. John XXIII parish. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New England Donor Services, (neds.org) in recognition of his grandson Conor.
