John S. Skarlos

John S. Skarlos, 88, a longtime resident of West Haven, entered into rest on April 22, 2026. John’s loving family, who cared for him throughout his illness, includes his wife Rosemarie Everone Skarlos, four daughters and their spouses Debra and William Guarnieri, Diane and the late Richard Moore, Lori and Michael Langrieger, Amy Skarlos and John Barone, twelve  adored grandchildren Michael (Stephanie) Vertucci, Christina and Melissa Guarnieri, William Brice, Michael and Chelsea Langrieger, William Guarnieri, Ryan Molster, Sean Langrieger, Michael (Adriana) Skarlos, Marquis (Sara) Reddick, Nicole Ciccosanti, and Tamara (Anthony) Goiran and eleven precious great grandchildren Giovanni Guarnieri, Ellarose Vertucci, Aubrey and Whitney Langrieger, Isabelle and Avery Goiran, Lilliana Gonzalez, Riker Vertucci, Riley and Lexi Alamo, and J.J. Reddick.

 Born in Manchester, New Hampshire, John came to West Haven as a young man and graduated from West Haven High School in 1957, where he served as the class vice president. In addition to his parents, Nicholas and Gertrude Grant Skarlos, he is predeceased by his siblings Chrysanthia Croteau and George Skarlos.

After 35 years as a lineman and then as a field engineer, at the United Illuminating Co., John retired in 1993. He thoroughly enjoyed retirement playing many rounds of golf, working part-time at the Yale Golf Course and as a past president and member of the Orange Hills Men’s Golf Association. In his younger years, John coached Ray Tellier Midget Football (Fire Dept.), Pop Warner (Seahawks) and several other youth sports teams. He graduated from Quinnipiac College where he was a member of both the football and baseball teams. He enlisted in the Army National Guard and completed three years of service.

 Active in many civic associations, John was a member of the West Have Elks Lodge, a former coach and player in the Twilight League, a member of the New Haven Football Officials Association and the West Haven Touchdown Club, to name a few.  In 2016 he received the honor of induction into the West Haven Athletic Hall of Fame.

Family and friends may visit the Skarlos family on Monday April 27 from 3 to 7 pm at the West Haven Funeral Home.  A prayer service will begin at 6 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Haven Touchdown Club, PO Box 26182, West Haven, CT. 06516.
