Joseph Durante Obituary

Joseph N. Durante, lovingly known as Joe, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025, at the age of 78. Born in New Haven, CT, on May 24, 1946, Joe spent most of his life in West Haven, where he built a legacy of family and friendship. Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Georgette, with whom he shared a life of love and devotion. He is survived by his children, Joseph R. Durante (Liz), Jill Grego (John Paul), and Julie DaCosta (Jason); his cherished granddaughters, Emma and Mila Durante, who were the light of his life; his sister, Sandy Powers; sister-in-law Susan; his adored niece, Tara Harvey; and his goddaughters Jennifer and Meredith.

Joe proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, a service that shaped his deep sense of duty and resilience. Following his military service, he dedicated 45 years to the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation, retiring with the respect and admiration of his peers.

He found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life—Tuesdays at horseback riding with Mila, proudly watching Emma thrive on the ski slopes, traveling to Florida, and taking train rides to the city with friends. Joe was the kind of man who never met a stranger—people were drawn to him wherever he went. His presence was magnetic, his laughter contagious, and his generosity unmatched.

Joe will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit lives on in the stories shared, the lives he touched, and the love he gave so freely.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 8th, from 3-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church, New Haven, on Friday, May 9th, at 10am.  PLEASE MEET DIRECTLY AT CHURCH.  Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Joe’s memory by gathering with loved ones, telling a good story, and living life with the same full-hearted joy.  Additionally, a donation may be offered in his honor to The Vietnam Veterans of America, https://vva.org.
