Manuel “Manny” L. Alvarez, 85, of Branford passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024, at Masonicare Health Care Center. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Maureen, his son Ian, daughter Christina and her husband Todd, daughter Elisa and her husband Richard and his grandchildren, Caty, Sam, Leah and Julia.
Born in Ourense, Spain, Manny moved to New York City with his mother and sister at an early age. After graduating high school, he attended college as a history student prior to becoming a Merchant Marine. He moved to Connecticut with Maureen and their children and lived here for the rest of his days working as a landscaper, a business owner, and then later as a courier in his retirement.
Manny spent time working on his favorite French cars, especially Peugeots and Renaults, collecting quite a few in his lifetime. He frequently spoke of his love for Spain and of all things Spanish. He was always happy to talk about his younger years in New York City and later growing up on Long Island. He frequently shared stories about his travels on the sea and through Europe, and his passion for the ocean and tall ships. Always quick with a favorite joke, Manny kept his sense of humor during good times and bad. He was a loving husband and father, and a loyal friend.
Services will be private. Those wishing to honor Manny may make memorial contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, one of his favorite charities.
