Martin Burke Obituary

Martin “Marty” Burke, 67, passed away Tuesday May 5, 2026, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer.  With his passing, he leaves behind his loving wife of 42 years, Cheryl, and his children Martin and Erin Burke.  Martin is predeceased by his parents Charles Jr. and Dorothy Burke, as well as his brother William Burke.

Martin cared deeply for his family and did everything to protect them as well as help them grow.  He enjoyed many hobbies, especially those he could share with loved ones.  He loved to travel every weekend to take his young family Soap Box Derby racing, watching NASCAR at the tracks or on TV, and was also an excellent cook, particularly with a grill and a smoker.  Marty took his skills with smoking different meats almost as seriously as his pizza making ability.  He was also no stranger to a fishing pole, starting at a very young age.  Marty was always the life of the party and made sure that everyone was happy and full. Martin started working very early in life at AVCO Lycoming in Stratford before joining Local 42 with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.  Martin traveled the country working tirelessly.  Through rain, snow, and extreme heat or cold, Marty and his team kept improving our electrical grid.  Marty was proud of his work, especially of the friends that were made along the way.  Their bonds were so strong that they became family.  Even after retiring in August of 2023, he still maintained these bonds and continually checked in with his “buddies”.

In earlier years Marty enjoyed his time as a member in the Trans Vans Club.  And yes, towed a bar behind the van, of course.  He loved all the times that were had and memories that were made.  Referred to mostly as the “Van Club Days” he loved to share his stories and reminisce about all the fun they had.

Martin was a proud Life Member of the Milford Elks Lodge #1589.  He supported the lodge and all its members continually, dating back to “old lodge” days.  The entire family is thankful for the love and support from the Lodge and its members over the years.  We all look forward to many more years of that feeling.

In addition to his loving wife and children, Martin is survived by his brothers Michael (Ginny) Burke and Charles Burke III as well as his sister-in-law Karen (Rocky) Settanni, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday May 13, 2026, from 4-7pm at West Haven Funeral Home 662 Savin Ave West Haven, CT.  An Elks Memorial Service will be held at 6:30pm.
