Michael Rocco Gemma, Jr.

Michael R. Gemma, Jr., 69, of West Haven died on August 28, 2025 after battling pancreatic cancer for five years.  He was the husband of Robin Mather Gemma and the beloved father of Nicole (Luis Soria) Gemma, Lori Gemma and Alyssa Gemma.  He also leaves his brother Donald (Joan) Gemma. Born in Yonkers, NY, Mike was a son of the late Michael and Josephine Lupis Gemma, Sr.

In 1979 Michael graduated from Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy, in Brooklyn. He went on to obtain his MBA from Pace University in Purchase, NY in 1984. Michael worked as a pharmacist at various hospitals and drugstores in Rockland County, NY prior to moving to CT.  He became the owner of Gilbert Pharmacy in Westville in 1980 and remained until 1995. There he installed an old-fashioned ice cream parlor called Josie’s, named after his mother. He subsequently worked as a pharmacist at Sam’s Club, Walmart and Stop & Shop.  Ultimately, he ended up as general manager of Omnicare of CT. and director of Pharmacy at Partners Pharmacy, both companies service the prescription needs for nursing homes throughout CT.  Michael was truly loved by many of his customers, many of whom followed him from pharmacy to pharmacy. Professional affiliations include Adjunct faculty, Office of Experimental Education, University of CT. School of Pharmacy from 2008-2015, President-CT. Chapter of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) in 2015 and member of the CT. Department of Energy and Environmental Protections’ Pharmaceutical Universal Waste Stakeholders Group in 2014.

Michael loved being with his family.  His three daughters meant everything to him along with his son-in-law who always brought a smile to his face. He looked forward to going on the family vacation every year to Myrtle Beach.  The first stop after landing was going to Damon’s Restaurant for lunch on the deck that overlooked the ocean.  His second love was muscle cars, most recently his black Dodge Challenger, revving up the engine and proudly having the license plate MG-SCAT1. A favorite pastime was dining out.  Michael was happy to go anywhere for a meal.  Among his favorites were Jerri’s Luncheonette in West Haven for breakfast, Carmine’s in Amity for dinner and Valley Diner, Route 34 for a quick sandwich and anywhere that served a good calamari!

Visitation will take place on Friday September 5 from 4 to 8 pm at the West Haven Funeral Home.  A prayer service and words of remembrance will begin at 7 pm at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
