Michael Zwack, age 74, of West Haven passed away at home, with his family by his side, on June 9, 2024. For the past 53 years, he was the loving husband of Ruth Gagliardi Zwack. Michael was born in New Haven, son of the late William and Mary Dolzenchuk Zwack. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his adoring children, Mary (Marc Izzo) Zwack of Stratford and Amy (Marcel) Ouellette of Milford, his cherished grandchildren, Dr. Taylor Ouellette, Olivia Ouellette, Kayla (Alex Johnson) Forleo, Michael Forleo, the twins, Robert Forleo and Marissa Forleo, RN, his sisters, Marilyn Bonyai and Virginia Proto both of Prospect, his sisters-in-law, Nancy Valentine of Ansonia and Frances Gagliardi of Branford, his brother-in-law, Charles Gagliardi of West Haven, and his beloved nieces and nephews. Michael was predeceased by his brother, William Zwack, and his brothers-in-law, Dominic Proto and Fritz Bonyai.
Michael was a proud US Army Veteran, serving in Vietnam and awarded the Purple Heart. He was a meat cutter by trade, first working for his family and then retiring from A & P Supermarkets. Known to most as part of the famous duo, Poppy & Roro. He took great pride in his family, loved to be around them whether it was celebrating an accomplishment, hosting a holiday, attending a party, or playing a mean game of LRC. Lest we forget to mention his pint-sized four-legged partner-in-crime, Baby, who was his breakfast buddy for the last decade.
The family would like to thank all the visiting nurses over the years, especially Sandy, Kim and Kelly, the Yale Hospital Transplant Team, Yale Home Hospice, and the West Shore Fire Department for all their assistance.
The hours for visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-7pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. His funeral procession will leave the funeral home on Thursday morning at 9:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Vianney Church, St. John XXIII Parish at 10am. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
