Oshel A. Skeens, 83, of West Haven passed away on May 3, 2023, peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a short illness. Born in Boone County, West Virginia on July 7, 1939, a son of the late Oshel and Dorothy (Collins) Skeens. Survived by his sister Gail (William) Woodard; sisters-in-law Charlotte and Pamela Skeens; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Oshel was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Mary Moccio Skeens; siblings Earl Brent Skeens, Sebert Skeens, Lucille (David) Estep, Gloria (Fredrick) Peters, Herbert Skeens, Charlotte (Hershel) Meadows, and Christopher Skeens.
Oshel, lovingly referred to as “Brother” or “Skeeter,” developed his steadfast work ethic as a young man while holding various jobs within his native Southwestern West Virginia. He subsequently forged a path within the coal mines, a leading industry and chief agricultural product of the area. Upon relocating to Connecticut in the 1960’s, Oshel worked many years and retired from Blakeslee Prestress Inc. One who appreciated the simple things in life, Oshel enjoyed walking the West Haven Boardwalk, took great pleasure in many trips to the casino, as well as The Elm Diner to visit with friends. He will be missed by all whose lives were touched by his presence.
Arrangements were entrusted to West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 9th, from 9:30 to 11 o’clock, at which point his formal procession will depart the funeral home. A graveside service will take place at 11:30, in East Lawn Cemetery, East Haven.
