Richard Herbert Armstead, 83, of Branford, passed away peacefully at his home on October 19, 2024, just days shy of his 84th birthday. Born in New Haven, CT, on October 27, 1940, Richard lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to his family and community. He was the beloved son of the late Herbert and Ann Brinza Armstead and is survived by his son, Scott (Carrie)Mongillo; three cherished grandchildren Caitlin (Michael) Nickas, Cheslea Mongillo and Scott (Abi Bernier) Mongillo, Jr. and three great-grandchildren Kaylee, Zoey and Maxwell. Richard is also remembered by his brothers, Robert (Sharon) and Michael, and his sisters, Kari Zan, Martha Meizies, and Bonnie Armstead, and his beloved nieces Stacy and Kendra and nephews Michael and Pete. He was preceded in death by his nephew, David.
Richard graduated from Wilbur Cross High School and later earned his degree from South Central Community College. He went on to dedicate 36 years of his career to Metro North Railroad, where he was recognized for his strong work ethic and commitment. A devoted sports enthusiast, he passionately supported the Boston Red Sox and UConn's women's basketball team. Richard also made a positive impact on his community by volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters, influencing the lives of many young individuals.
In addition to his professional and volunteer endeavors, Richard treasured family vacations in Vermont, where he created lasting memories with his loved ones. Richard’s warmth, kindness, and sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 25th from 4-7pm at West Haven Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Covenant House in NYC.
