Ruth R. Lombardi, 95, passed away on Saturday, April 23rd, after unexpected heart failure. Even though a failing heart took her away from this world, her loving heart and love for music left a beacon of light, happiness, and melodies that will continue to live with us all for the remainder of our lives.
Ruth has been a talented soprano, loyal, and dedicated chorus member for over 60 years which makes her an “Honorary Charter Member”. During Ruth’s almost half a century of singing with the GNHCC, she sang at the Bicentennial in Philadelphia in 1976, she has been a soloist and has served on the board as publicity Chair, Social Chair, and as Member-at-Large.
Born in Philadelphia, Ruth’s family moved to New Haven when her father, Rachmiel Cohen, was struck by a car while visiting relatives. Ruth went to Commercial High in New Haven during which time she sang the lead in four Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas. After Highschool, Ruth worked as a typist at Winchester Arms where she joined the Winchester Players which put on plays and musicals. Ruth took time off to get married to John “Sonny” Lombardi, raise four children, and then returned to work when the kids went to school. However, this time Ruth’s job was as a principal singer at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in West Haven where she sang at the masses, weddings, funerals for over 35 years! She also subbed as soloist at four other Catholic Churches in West Haven. As Ruth liked to say, “Not bad for a Jewish Girl”!

Mother of predeceased son Kirk Lombardi and is survived by her three daughters, Susie Lombardi (Rodger) Mike, Cheryl McGuire, & Nancy (Gary) Gilson. Also survived by nieces & nephews & grandchildren & great grandchildren.
