Sara Keyes Obituary

Sara Jeanne Keyes died on February 16, 2024. She was born at home on July 3, 1939, the daughter of George J. Keyes and Mary (Gilmartin) Keyes in New Haven, CT. She was best known as Sally by family and friends.  Sara was the eleventh of twelve children. Her father died just a week before her fifth birthday on June 24, 1944, and the family moved to West Haven that same summer. Sara started first grade a year later at Noble School, then attended St. Lawrence School in grades 4-8. She was awarded a half scholarship to Sacred Heart Academy for her freshman year, then completed high school at West Haven High School, class of 1957. Sara attended Albertus Magnus College in New Haven for 1 1/2 years. In January, 1959, she withdrew from college, and began employment as a teller at Connecticut Savings Bank. After eight years, Sara began a series of job moves that resulted in more responsibility and took many banking courses and seminars. She became a branch manager and Assistant Vice President, enjoying many happy years at the bank. Sara retired from CSB in 1986, at which time she also began a return to Albertus Magnus College night classes. This led to her achieving her bachelor’s degree in business and economics, Class of 1992. At the same time, she worked at HSR Credit Union (now New Haven County Credit Union) as a Loan Officer, and then Branch Manager until 2004, when she chose retirement.

In addition to her parents, Sara was predeceased by her sisters: Gertrude K. Mohn, Rose K. Micucci, and Margaret K. Amendola, and brothers: George F. Keyes, David G. Keyes, Thomas M. Keyes, James J. Keyes, and John T. (Ted) Keyes, Sr. She is also predeceased by nephews: Stanley G. Mohn, Jr., Steven Keyes, Joseph DeChello and Michael Mohn and grandniece, Kim Mohn. Sara is survived by sisters: Kathleen K. Traub, Ruth K. Gindhart, and Mary K. (John) DeChello, her sisters-in-law: Barbara Keyes and Elizabeth Keyes.

She is also survived by forty-five nephews and nieces, including three Godchildren: Daniel M. Keyes, Joan K. Cwirka, and John P. DeChello, Jr. There are about ninety next generation relatives, and thirty of the next. Sara was very much aware of the accomplishments of her young relatives, and her love for them was boundless. When family affairs were not keeping her involved, Sara enjoyed learning genealogy, reading novels, crossword puzzles, classical music. She also did volunteer work at several parishes, including St. Lawrence and St. John Vianney carnivals, and as an offertory counter. Sara had been involved with the Keyes Family Reunions for over ten years, and attracted 100-125 every two years. Sara also leaves an extended number of first, second and third cousins, with whom she kept in touch, often by e-mail. She also leaves her good friend, Dawn M. Beckert, who often went on trips with her.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-7pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green.  Her funeral procession will leave the funeral home on Friday morning at 9:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Vianney Church, St. John XXIII Parish at 10am.  Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Sara's memory may be made to Edmundite Missions, 1428 Broad St., Selma, AL 36701-4304.
