Walter “Walt” G. Harris, 94, of Guilford, died on June 16, 2022, at Middlesex Hospital. Born in West Haven on December 30, 1927, a son of the late William and Madeline (Neu) Harris. Survived by his most beloved wife of 73 years, Virginia (Tripp) Harris; loving sons James (Jayne) Harris Sr. (Retired Insp. CT States Atty), Donald R. Harris (Retired NoHPD); four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. Additionally preceded in death by brother William Harris, as well as sisters Madeline Abbott, Helen Clancy, and Virginia Marches.
A lifelong resident of West Haven, Walt graduated from West Haven High School and entered the U.S. Navy in February of 1946, proudly serving on the USS Kearsarge. Shortly thereafter he met his bride and they embarked on a wonderful life together. He devoted his career as an engineer to AVCO (Textron) Lycoming, whereby he traveled the world representing the company until his retirement in 1987. Walt believed strongly in service-mindedness and supporting one’s community, as illustrated by his 35-year Christmas tradition of representing Santa Claus through his membership of the Colonial Park Association. He helped form the West Haven Band Parents Association, and was actively involved in the Civitan Club, as well as several other civic organizations. His favored pastimes were spent surrounded by family, particularly in later years attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and spending time at their cottage in New Hampshire. Although Walt has now entered into rest, he will forever remain with those he knew and loved.
